The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the occurrence of Scandinavia in the then daily English newspaper Yorkshire Herald during the First World War. The dissertation looks into what the Yorkshire Herald wrote about Scandinavia in the parts of the newspaper where the newspaper´s own opinion was given. This approach is connected to the theoretical idea that the British local and regional press was politically free during the war period. The dissertation also looks into the number of news telegrams etcetera that concerned Scandinavia during the period.The result shows that Scandinavia, both as a whole as well as the three individual countries, was mentioned about 700 times, split over about 600 telegrams and articles, during the examined period stretching from the first of August 1914 to the eleventh of November 1918. Material that gives the newspaper´s opinion regarding issues concerning Scandinavia can be found six times during the period.

Den här studien är utförd i Chiang Mai i Thailand och syftar till att undersöka situationen för burmesiska journalister som därifrån verkar i exil. Sedan 2011 har omvälvande politiska samhällsförändringar genomförts av regimen i Burma som internationellt omtalas som en pågående demokratiseringsprocess. Exilmedierna har i skrivande stund flyttat delar av produktionen in i landet i hopp om att i framtiden flytta hela verksamheten till Burma. Följande frågeställningar behandlas: 1) Hur upplever exiljournalisterna sin roll i den pågående demokratiseringsprocessen? 2) Hur ser förhållandet mellan exiljournalisterna och regimen ut? 3) Finns det skillnader mellan att jobba inifrån Burma eller i exil som påverkar rapporteringen? 4) Hur kan de studerade mediernas roll förstås i förhållande till McQuails (2003) teori om ?demokratiskt deltagande medier??Den teoretiska ramen baseras på teorier om demokrati, det offentliga rummet, mediers roll i underutvecklade länder, länder under samhällsförändring och alternativa medieformer.

The purpose of this study was to examine the foreign news flow in Sweden´s largest news agency TT. Since TT has an important position as a news provider to most of Sweden´s local and national news outlets, it was important to examine exactly what their news stories consisted of.The theoretical background of this study consist of theories of news values, agenda setting, dependency theory and the theory about the ?news shadow? a lack of coverage leads to.In our quantitative study we have looked at 506 articles taken from the TT news flow during two weeks In November 2013. We have studied which continents and countries the news origins from, who have supplied the text, the topics of the news, which one gets to speak in the text and what general tone the story has.The study shows that the supply of news follows the criteria of news values. It also shows that in some regions of the world the coverage is almost nonexistent.

The purpose of this study is to show which content that is most common in the Swedish News Agency TT Nyhetsbyrån?s sports coverage. It also shows if the coverage is concentrated to for example any special sports, clubs, people or topics.This study uses a quantitative content analysis and the result is based on texts from 28 systematically selected days during one year. In total, the study includes 906 texts.The result of this study shows that the sports content of TT Nyhetsbyrån?s news feed is mainly concentrated to two sports, football/soccer and ice hockey.

It is in society's interest that news is conveyed in a correct and memorable manner. News contributes to general knowledge and increases awareness of other people's life situations. Because of news the population is able to follow and be a part of the political debate. Therefore, it is important that one remembers what one has seen, both in long and in short term, i.e. memorability is a critical aspect when it comes to news.The aim of this work was to study the news form a memorability perspective, that is, how long one remembers the news after watching them.

Kok Haal-Tau i centrala Tian Shan påverkas som resten av världens glaciärer av klimatförändringar. Avrinningen från glaciärerna påverkar vattenflödet i Tarimbäckenet, i och med glaciärernas koppling tillklimatförändringar riskeras vattenflödet att ändras. Genom fjärranalys av området avgörs hur förändringen har sett ut mellan 1990 och 2013. Den uppmätta glaciärarea i området har ökat kraftigt samtidigt som dess tungor har dragit sig tillbaka. Skillnaden mellan uppmätt area och tillbakadragande tillskrivs olikheter i snötäcken mellan åren samt förekomst av supraglacialt material.

What are the viewers attitude towards the news content and how do they find the news cast useful for them personally?We choosed retirees as our target group due to their vulnerable economic position in today?s society and TV as an important medium for them due to the digital divide. The study was performed with twelve qualitative interviews and one group interview where six retirees took part.We discovered a big interest for economic news in the target group. The majority had a sympathetic view of the news cast they saw but they also expressed skepticism toward the economy segment and/or news castings. The majority expressed a lack of trust for the journalists and the experts brought in to share observations and make announcements, and the financial business overall.

Researchers points out that social media has become a powerful venue to spread news, both for the news business and the users. Although the news diffusion has become a phenomenon to be reckoned with, we have found no research in Sweden about what motivate users of social media to share news.This thesis work therefore investigates news sharing on the social network Facebook by examining user motives in the light of the media theory uses and gratifications. A web survey was conducted and distributed to students at a Swedish university. The result showed that expression was the strongest motive to share news on Facebook, and the item that was highly valued by the students was to give other valuable information. The result also showed that other motives for sharing news was socialization, information, status and entertainment. .

This qualitative study examines news values in local journalism. The study is based on the results of five personal interviews with journalists and editors at the newspaper Nerikes Allehanda. The purpose of this paper is to examine how news values is made in the editorial process. The conflict over Western Sahara is primarily a conflict over sovereignty, with Morocco on one side claiming territorial rights, and the Polisario Front on the other side claiming popular sovereignty. The conflict has till this day not been resolved and is in a dire need of a solution. In order to determine which solution is the most appropriate, an understanding of all the complex aspects of the conflict is required. In this context, the study aims to examine the conflict in a globalized setting by analyzing how the American news agency AP News portrays the conflict. The US media conglomerate was specifically chosen due to its dominance over international information flows.

We have inquired into how the amount of foreign news has changed over the last 30 years in two major Swedish newspapers, which subjects and regions has dominated the content of the foreign news and what subjects dominate the reporting from certain regions. This was done with a quantitative analysis of subjects and regions written about in 1100 news texts during a week in each year of 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008. To further broaden our study, we also charted with the analysis how the newspapers domesticate foreign news and how they use international news agencies. As a basis for our discussion we use Van Ginnekens theories of world news centres, Westerståhl & Johanssons and Galtung & Ruges theories of foreign news selection as well as the theories of Hjarvard and Biltereyst about the domestication of foreign news due to commercial pressures and objectives on the newspapers. Our result of the amount of foreign news in the two newspapers is also compared to several similar empirical studies by different researchers.
